El dijous 5 de novembre, a les 17 hores, oferiré una una conferència sobre les relacions intel·lectuals de Clementi a la Keats-Shelley House de Roma.
Buried in Westminster Abbey with the epitaph “Father of the Pianoforte”, Clementi is best remembered for his contributions to piano pedagogy. Yet his achievements extended far beyond this: he was an influential composer, a piano manufacturer, a music publisher and an indefatigable traveller.
In this talk, pianist and independent researcher Marina Rodríguez Brià explores a lesser-known chapter of Clementi's life: his friendships with the philosopher William Godwin, father of Mary Shelley, and the writer Thomas Holcroft.
Clementi's longstanding relationship with Godwin developed from an intellectual friendship into a more personal connection, bringing him into contact with the younger generation of Romantic literary figures, including Percy Bysshe and Mary Shelley. Their correspondence reveals how naturally Clementi belonged to their circle.
From his early years as an organist in Rome to his performances before European royalty and his involvement in London's liberal intellectual circles, Clementi's story reveals the rich connections between music, literature and intellectual life in the Romantic period.
